Villa Tartaruga, the strory - Part 1
After a language school stay in Cagli (Marche) in 1997, we had an Italian aupair girl with us in Germany. The next year she invited us to her home in Piagge/Terreroveresche.
During a walk, we fell in love with old farmhouses, or rather ruins. Back in Germany, a neighbor gave us the address of a marcher in the region, who guided us through various ruins and partially inhabitable houses three weeks later.
We immediately fell in love with the Tartaruga, which was probably built around 1870 and stood in the middle of the fields, due to its location and quickly signed a Compromesso (preliminary contract) and the purchase contract just one month later.
It got its name Tartaruga = turtle, from its lowered roof, which looks like the shell of a turtle.
The house had a partially converted upper floor and otherwise a hay store in the room next door and a large stable on the first floor, which was no longer used as such. All under a relatively tight roof. “It rarely rains in Italy” were the words of the marcher. It also had no foundations and only gravel around it.
And it does rain in Italy, as we soon discovered during our first renovation phase. We commissioned the extension of the upper floor, the renovation of the roof and the creation of a new entrance area.
After the building company left, we moved in and spent our two-week vacation shovelling, filling, painting and cleaning right up to the last minute. Incidentally, it was like that for the next few years, or still is if you ask our children.
Part 2
Field stones were collected from the surrounding fields, the garden was laid out and the gravel path was renovated. From then on, every vacation was a working or adventure vacation. After three years, the family went on strike and only wanted to come if there was a pool on site. Well, but a pool for five or six weeks a year? No, that’s not an option! And so the idea of a vacation apartment was born and a professional construction company was commissioned.
The expansion of the vacation apartment immediately entailed some construction work, such as foundations, insulation, new water pipes and new power lines. From the following spring, our house had two completely separate apartments. Guests have sole use of the entire first floor, the garden and the pool. The first floor has three double rooms with a maximum occupancy of six people. If required, a further double room with bathroom can be rented on the upper floor.
Construction phases with the carport, further strengthening of the foundations and many useful details have followed since then.
As we are on site even when it is not rented out, you can see our signature on both the house and the property. Many regular customers confirm this and love the well-kept garden and the lovingly furnished ambience.
On site you will find a folder with photos documenting the extensive renovation work, which will leave you in awe.
